I need advice on what to use as counterweight on my l3400 FEL. I have considered the tire weights, calcium, a box blade and the kubota weight box. What is the best/most useful?

A nice, heavy box blade seems a good choice versus the weight box. The blade will hang out farther past the back of the machine giving you more leevrage where you need it. Plus most likely you'll be spreading whatever you're loading too. ....

I would recommned not to use calcium in your tires. There is a product on the market called RimGuard that will not cause the corrosion problem that calcium does. Loaded tires work well for light FEL work. For heavier work, I use a box blade on the 3-pt (380lbs) for additional ballast.
The loaded tires will add about 220lbs per tire, but at the back axle, so it isn't as effective as a weight 24" behind the lift arms. ....

I use calcium loaded tires. The reason for the calcium is that it is so much heavier than other antifreeze solutions. My calcium is at about 15 pounds per gallon. Antifreeze solutions run about 6-7 pounds per gallon.
In addition, for intermediate loads I run a rear blade and can hang some suitcase weights on it as well.
When I want to get maximum FEL capability, I have a backhoe attachment that I put on the tractor. It sticks out further, but it is heavy enough and far enough back that it keeps the rear end solidly on the ground with full capacity loads in the bucket. ....

I will tell you what I did for my L3430 to counter the
weight of a front snow blower. By pure luck, I was able
to locate and purchase an IH ripper. I removed the ripper
points and mounted the frame on my 3pt., then placed the
six weights (about 60lbs apiece) on and tighted everything
down. It works great and only cost me $250.00. I say again
it was pure luck, as the guy who had it had no use for it.
Dont believe it was ever used. The paint is still on the
ripper points.

An approach I use is to mount a heavy weight on an inexpensive 3pt bar. I have a very heavy cast front tractor weight from an old Ford 1710 I used to own. I bolted it to a cheap straight bar with 3pt pins on each end (you can find these bars at any tractor supply). It works well and still fits in my garage. ....
